Favorite Parts Of Being A Manager Strategy And Finance At DoorDash

Justine, a Manager (Strategy & Finance) at DoorDash, values the improved work-life balance and the opportunity to utilize analytical skills in their current role, contrasting it with the "80 to a hundred hours a week" demands of previous banking positions. The access to DoorDash's data, exposure to various business aspects, and continuous learning opportunities—"right when I joined I learned a programming language, SQL"—are key aspects that make the role particularly fulfilling.

What do you enjoy most about being in your current role?

My response to this question will be heavily influenced by my prior roles. In my current position, I truly enjoy exercising my analytical skills while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Previously, in banking and investing, I worked eighty to a hundred hours a week. There were times I worked weekends and consistently stayed until 2 AM. That is not the case here, and I am very thankful for that.

It's also much more casual. As you can see, I'm wearing a hoodie, which is what I would wear to work. My job is fully remote, a significant change from my previous roles. Before COVID, I had to go into the office every day and wear business casual attire.

My old work environment was very different, with people always in ties. Moving beyond lifestyle and dress code, at DoorDash, I really value having access to all of the company's data and exposure to different parts of the business.

When working at a bank or as an intermediary for companies, you rely on them to provide data or communicate their future plans. However, working in finance in-house at a company allows me to pull any data I need, or even join meetings discussing weekly business plans. This way, I can understand what's happening in the company without waiting for someone to respond to my questions.

I also appreciate the opportunity to continuously learn new things. While in banking, you were always learning about new investment opportunities, companies, industries, and competitors.

At DoorDash, learning has been different. When I joined, I learned SQL, a programming language I wouldn't have encountered in banking. Through exposure to and access to different teammates, I can easily see what others in analytics are doing, how they structure their data, and how they approach problems. I can learn from their work simply by reviewing their files.

From a finance perspective, I've learned how to forecast our referral program liabilities. Currently, I'm learning how the company approaches price sensitivity and how to model it. Depending on the group or colleagues I'm working with, I can learn more about analysis, business, finance, or operations. It feels like an unending supply of knowledge.
