Favorite Parts Of Working In The Tech Industry As A Strategy And Finance Manager

Justine, a Manager (Strategy & Finance) at DoorDash, appreciates the improved work-life balance in the tech industry compared to banking, noting that "in general it's a lot less high stress and high long work hours." The unique aspect of working at DoorDash, however, involves managing the complexities of "a three-sided marketplace," servicing consumers, dashers, and merchants, which Justine finds particularly interesting.

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?

When people think of industry, they often think of tech. I'll give a standard tech response and then something more specific to DoorDash.

Work-life balance in tech is, in my opinion, unbeatable. Previously in banking, the job was very client-facing. This meant if the company had a question for you at 10 PM, it was in your best interest to do whatever it took to get them a reasonable response by the next day. It could be a big or small ask, and it could come at any hour, but you needed to respond promptly to maintain client relationships.

This is quite different when working at a big tech company. Usually, you don't have external clients; your clients are typically your manager or your team. They are all on a similar work schedule and wavelength. While some teams may have longer working hours, and your manager might still expect a response after a late email, it's generally less high-stress with fewer long work hours. This is one of my favorite aspects of working in tech.

For DoorDash specifically, it's a tech company, but my role is less about the technology itself. I'm not a machine learning engineer on the cutting edge of AI. My focus is more on managing a three-sided marketplace: the consumer, the Dasher, and the merchant. It's been interesting learning about these various stakeholders, their business needs, and how DoorDash or companies in general can better service each of these areas and stakeholders.
