What skills are most important for a job like yours?
In terms of qualities, I think a coach needs to be empathetic and attuned to other people. They should be a people person and a strong listener, connected to something larger than themselves. This allows them to hear the many layers of what might be happening for someone.
As a consultant, I focus on problem-solving and helping people move towards effective solutions based on research. This requires critical thinking, being generative, and being able to hold conflict. I also allow for emergence to take place.
These are all skillsets I consider in my work. My work also centers around wellbeing, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. I'm constantly integrating these practices, and they all require different skillsets.
I consider myself a continuous learner. I'm always exploring what's happening in these fields, how each can foster growth, and how they can interplay and support each other. We need to use this information to think holistically about our growth.
We also need to consider organizational growth holistically. This involves thinking about our systems, our individual lives, and many other things. I think there are integration skills involved in being able to hold the whole, which is a big part of this practice.
