"Hey John, could you walk me through your career path, starting with your experiences in college? Did you have any internships or jobs before your current role as a product manager?"

While I was in college, I took time off between my sophomore and junior year for soul searching. During that time, I did a lot of consulting because I knew how to code websites and use tools like Photoshop, which are integral to business and tech.

When I returned to school, I finished my degree in just a few short months. After college, I got a job at a local hospital as a web developer and social media specialist. This allowed me to use my web development skills and also focus on the marketing side, thinking about how we message our customers.

From there, I transitioned to The Walt Disney Company, focusing on operations and publishing within their CMS system. Disney has many different distribution methods, and that was my primary focus.

After that, I moved into managing authentication for cable providers. It was at this time that I learned about product management, which was still a relatively new concept. I realized my consulting experience, managing stakeholders, made me a perfect fit for this field.

I spoke with leaders at Disney about switching to product management. Although it took some time, I eventually made the transition and worked in a product management role at Disney for over three years. After that, I moved to TripAdvisor for a short period during the pandemic, and now I'm in a senior product management role at Warner Brothers Discovery.
