What skills are most important for a job like yours?
I think whether it's a research scientist or previously I was an environmental specialist, hard skills are important. I would say everything Microsoft: Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and OneDrive.
GIS is also a really big one. Now that I'm getting more into the financial side, Business Objects is relevant. But for the most part, the Microsoft Suite and typing skills are key.
Typing skills aren't always taught anymore. When you're constantly reading, writing, and juggling many projects, being able to type quickly and take notes diligently is really important. Research skills are also essential.
In terms of soft skills, I would say adaptability and a willingness and ability to learn new skills and topics are crucial in a constantly evolving sector. Being able to communicate that knowledge and new data, and present it to colleagues, superiors, or the public is also vital.
Our role is to provide the public with as much information and resources as we can. Therefore, communication and facilitation are really good soft skills to have.
