Biggest Challenges Faced by a Creative Director at EY

Jarred, EY's Creative Director, identifies two key challenges: the subjective nature of creative work, requiring the ability to "detach from" negative feedback while remembering "there are still enough people who did resonate," and the constant pressure to produce increasingly impactful ideas, necessitating effective expectation management.

What are some of the biggest challenges that come with your current role?

One of the biggest challenges is knowing that there will always be someone who doesn't resonate with what you're putting out there. Creativity is such a subjective art. When you are working with a team, with clients, or with anyone, you have to be able to separate yourself from the idea being evaluated.

You know there will be a person in the audience, or a segment of that audience, that just doesn't feel it. You have to be able to detach from that and know that enough people did resonate with it. There's a reason you got to the final product.

If you can overcome that knowledge or that fear, the challenge becomes a little less scary, but it doesn't mean it's not there all the time. Another big challenge is the pressure to always come up with the next good idea.

It's never enough that the one idea you had is the best anyone has ever seen. They'll come back next time and say that was great, let's go bigger. That pressure can sometimes mount. It's about knowing how to manage it and manage your expectations too, and maybe keeping some of your best ideas hidden.
