What skills are most important for a job like yours as an associate?

Ultimately, I think there are three most important skills for an associate role at a firm like McKinsey. The first is communication skills. The second is the ability to analyze data and synthesize your outputs.

The third is probably around project management and time management. Communication is super important within the consulting space. You're expected to analyze data and develop strategies and recommendations, but most importantly, you need to communicate them effectively and impactfully with the client.

Data analysis and synthesis are also crucial. It's important to be able to look at a dataset and pull key insights quickly. Making sense of large datasets and transforming them into a more digestible format is key. If you can do that quickly and communicate the output effectively, you're an excellent consultant from the start.

The last piece is around time management and project planning. You're never going to know the answer when you begin a new project. It's probably not something you've done before, especially at the associate level.

A core skill is the ability to map out an approach to find the answer and iterate frequently. This involves managing your overall project to get from point A to point Z within a given timeframe. From a time management perspective, know when to move on. You never want to spend too long on one thing.

This also means knowing when to raise your hand and flag to your leadership team that you're stuck. You may need to have a problem-solving session to work through it.
