Significant Career Lesson From A Small Business Owner
Howard's most significant career lesson involves recognizing and managing internal voices advocating for safer, less risky paths; the key is to understand that these voices, while aiming for self-preservation ("we want to keep this train running"), may hinder necessary growth, requiring one to "risk your entire career" and trust that clients will accept the inherent imperfections of a journey toward expertise.

Video Highlights
1. Overcome the fear of taking risks: Howard emphasizes that it is important to listen to your intuition but also to understand the source of your fears. Often, these fears stem from a desire for self-preservation and safety, but sometimes, taking calculated risks is necessary for growth and success. He uses his own business as an example, acknowledging the risks involved in starting a business without prior experience in the field.
2. Importance of Self-Awareness and Emotional Management: Howard highlights the importance of self-awareness and emotional management in navigating career challenges. He explains that understanding the source of your internal ‘voices’ and feelings—whether they promote safety or growth—is critical in making sound decisions.
3. Building Trust and Resilience: Howard describes the importance of trust in client relationships, especially when you are new to a field and make mistakes. He believes that demonstrating ownership and being transparent with clients builds trust and fosters understanding. This speaks to building resilience as a business owner.

What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significantly in your career?
If I had to pick one thing right now, it's that you'll have voices and feelings in your head that will convince you to take a safer path. This might not be the path you actually need to take.
I don't want to say ignore these feelings, as I'm in a business that encourages listening to your gut and trusting your North Star. Instead, it's about understanding the source of why these feelings arise.
Many of your internal voices and feelings are there to preserve you. They have a job: to keep things running, to keep you safe, and to help you feel good.
Sometimes you'll face a situation that doesn't feel good, like risking your career in a business without prior experience. You have to work with that feeling.
You might acknowledge, "I don't have much experience, but we'll gain it." You'll accept that there will be a rocky start and that you will make mistakes with some clients.
You have to trust that clients will accept this. Some will leave, and others will recognize that you're human. They'll understand that even with expertise, you're still human and will still work with you.
Ultimately, it's all about self-awareness and managing your feelings as you navigate your path.
