What is one lesson you've learned that's proven significant in your career?

One lesson I've learned is that showing up is most of the battle. You don't always know the impact you have on other people.

I've had students who were very quiet throughout the year and didn't always seem engaged. At the end of the year, they sometimes said that I was their favorite teacher and that I had a large impact on their school year or how they were feeling.

That comment, especially in my first year, caused me to greet my students at the door every single day. I also check in with my students throughout the day. These are things I was already doing in my classroom, but I never knew they had such a big impact on a student.

The same thing applies with staff and my colleagues. Sometimes, just having someone there, showing up, saying hi, and checking in on people is all you need to make an impact.
