Favorite Parts of Being a Professor at CSU Long Beach

Herman, a CSU Long Beach professor, finds the most fulfilling aspect of teaching to be "helping students" and witnessing their "light bulb moment" as they grasp complex concepts and build confidence, especially seeing students realize their potential for graduate studies; furthermore, Herman values the flexibility the role provides, including the autonomy to manage own schedule, pursue side projects, and maintain a top-tier "work-life balance," which contrasts sharply with previous aspirations for a data analyst position stuck behind a desk all day.

What do you enjoy most about being in your role?

My favorite things about teaching are helping students and seeing that "light bulb moment" when they truly understand complex material. It's beautiful to witness their growth and self-doubt turn into confidence as they master the subject.

Many students have told me they wouldn't have pursued graduate school if they hadn't succeeded in my class. I believe most people are capable of great things, but they need support. Being in a position to encourage individuals is something I deeply value, reflecting how I was raised with a strong sense of community.

I treat my classroom like a sports team. We win and lose together, and this mentality has helped me build confidence in my students.

I also have a lot of flexibility in my schedule, allowing for a great work-life balance. When students are off, I can be too. This means I can take extended vacations, work other jobs, consult, or simply enjoy time with family.

I only work Monday through Thursday, giving me a three-day weekend. While there are many emails, I have the freedom to travel, attend conferences, and see my family without feeling micromanaged, which I greatly appreciate.

Initially, I wanted to be a data analyst, but I realized I dislike being stuck at a desk all day. I enjoy moving around, interacting with people face-to-face, and teaching provides all of that. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
