How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
I think it's important to be good at building relationships. It's a small world, and you never know who might come to you later with an idea, or connect you to someone who has a great idea and is starting a company. Simply being comfortable meeting people, building relationships, and networking is a valuable skill.
I've seen people with deep expertise in specific areas, like healthcare or climate change. They deeply understand their industries and have worked in operating roles at companies, gaining direct experience. This allows them to understand the companies and players in the space, how they operate, and what motivates them.
I believe these individuals are good at investing because they clearly understand the problem set. People who are consistently curious are also important. You need that curiosity to learn and not assume that past knowledge will always apply in the future.
It's essential to be willing to question assumptions and relearn things you thought you already knew. Finally, people with a sense of vision or an idea of how the world will evolve tend to have an edge. While predicting the future is difficult for most, having a sense of how the world will evolve over the next five to ten years is beneficial. Understanding the technological and business needs to achieve that evolution also gives these individuals an advantage.
