What skills are most important for a job like yours?
A thread through all my career paths has definitely been a curiosity about people and their stories. This showed up in my journalism, public relations, sales, and recruiting.
A common theme was always that I had to meet new people and build relationships with them, both quickly and effectively, to tell their stories. So now, in my day-to-day, I'm definitely using those skills.
I'm someone who builds relationships and networks. I'm an extrovert, so that comes in handy and shines through. Networking is actually how I met the founder of my startup.
I had been networking with him when I was at the tech company. When I stepped away from that organization, I got connected with him at a networking event. He asked me what I wanted to do next.
That's when I told him about my different career pivots and what I was wanting to do. I asked if he knew anyone who would need someone like me. That's when he said, "Hey, let's build this together." So, networking is definitely a skill that's been very important for my job.
