Biggest Challenges Faced By An IT Manager At A Public Bay Area Biotech Company

Harold, an IT Manager at a Bay Area biotech company, finds the biggest challenge in the role to be the "breakdown of communication" with both stakeholders and team members, observing instances where individuals withhold information due to fear or embarrassment, or when teammates avoid disclosing personal issues affecting their work. This lack of open communication "erodes the trust that we should all have" and hinders Harold's ability to provide support and solutions.

What is your biggest challenge in your role?

That comes down to communication from both stakeholders and the team. Sometimes people have issues they're too afraid or embarrassed to tell you about.

This could be visiting certain websites or downloading files they shouldn't have. They might not want to feel like they're letting you down or exposing what they're doing on company devices.

Because of this, they might not tell you directly. You have to use clues to figure out what happened.

On the flip side, teammates sometimes show up late or avoid certain people without explaining why. They might be having issues at home, but if they don't tell me, I wouldn't know.

Without that information, I can't offer support, advice, or run interference for them. The biggest challenge is the breakdown of communication, which erodes the trust we should all have.
