What skills are most important for a job like yours?
I'd say three things are most important. The first is precision and paying attention to details, especially as an associate. It's really important that the deliverables I'm creating are client-ready.
This means really paying attention to making sure there are no formatting or spelling errors as I pass them on to my superiors for review. I think that's very important.
The second thing is being able to problem-solve creatively. There are a lot of tight deadlines in consulting.
It's important to use the resources you have available, even when assigned an ambiguous task. This includes using your firm's resources or reaching out to others you may have worked with previously for examples or inspiration. You can also use your own repository of previously created deliverables and your existing knowledge.
And then the third, probably obvious and important in every career, is your ability to work within a team. Know when things need to be focused and concise in conversation. Also, know when it's important to engage and develop relationships with the people you're working with.
