What skills are most important for a job like yours?
I would say the most important skills are problem-solving and being able to quickly analyze an issue. You need to understand all of the key components and then rapidly develop solutions.
Communication is also huge. I work with a lot of senior leadership across the company, including VPs and C-suite levels. When working with deals, you're interacting with the target company's C-suite or VPs.
You have to present a professional appearance and use professional communication with many people who are running companies. Communication is key to conveying messages succinctly and efficiently. Getting those messages across to leadership is really important.
Another piece is organization. There are always many things happening, and you need to stay grounded in what's important. With a million things going on, organizational skills are critical to prioritizing what matters most at each stage of a deal.
Finally, there's a willingness to learn and a thirst for knowledge. Often, you have to become an expert quickly on someone's business to understand what drives them and their core operations. You then need to be able to communicate that to the broader team at Zillow. I'm usually one of the first contacts with the target and one of the first to understand their business strategy. My role is to intelligently cascade that information and tell everyone else what they need to know.
