What does a day in the life of a development and communications manager look like?
It can look totally different for anyone, depending on the organization you're working for. Even in my role, it looks different on a day-to-day basis, which I love. That's one of the reasons this work really motivates and excites me.
That variation is something I need from a career. I work a hybrid schedule: two days in the office and three days remote. Obviously, I'm remote right now.
When I'm in the office, my days mostly consist of team meetings and team coworking time. This is hugely beneficial, being able to just be in the office and do individual work while coming together as needed.
Recently, my role has expanded to include working with our Green Team youth employees. I teach them marketing, communications, and fundraising, which has been amazing. This has bolstered all aspects of my work.
I feel more connected to the work from a passion standpoint, and it helps me market what we're doing better and tell our stories more effectively. This, in turn, helps me write better grants, social media content, and produce more compelling fundraising campaigns.
I've also been able to develop real relationships with our amazing Green Team youth. I think if my role had remained siloed away from the programs aspect, I would be missing out on knowing these incredible young people.
I'm also really grateful that my schedule allows me to prioritize things that aren't a direct function of my role but uplift every element of my day-to-day.
When I'm working remotely, my days are for focused copywriting. I'm usually sitting hunched over in my pajamas, writing grants and social media copy. That's really it, but it varies day to day.
When I'm working with the Green Teams, sometimes we go out to our community gardens, or stay in the office and do things around our indoor growing space. We also take photos. It's really nice to have the creative freedom to explore these things.
