What Type Of Person Thrives In The Retail Industry According To A Buyer At Ross

Gabby, a Ross Buyer, highlights that success in retail demands individuals who enjoy "fast-paced environments" and possess strong organizational skills and memory. A genuine "passion for retail" and understanding of market trends, inventory, and data are crucial, exemplified by a past interview question about hypothetically buying mattresses—the focus being less on the product and more on the business acumen.

How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?

People who thrive in the retail industry love fast-paced environments. You're often doing three or four things at once.

You have to be organized and have a good memory. If you forget something that needed to be done weeks ago, even if it's small, it's an issue. Those are the people who thrive; you just have to be really on top of things.

You also need a passion for retail and energy for the industry; you have to get excited. For instance, holiday sets came in yesterday, and we were all excited to check them out, see what's new, and what colors are trending. You need a genuine interest in it.

If you're not interested in fashion or cosmetics, it's different. I'm a skincare junkie. I used to be in men's suits and wouldn't say I had a passion for them. But it's also about a passion for how retail and business are conducted.

One of the funniest and hardest questions I got asked during my Macy's interview for my internship was: "What if you were a buyer for mattresses, what would you do?" This was when I was 20.

But it's really more about how the business is run, market trends, inventory, and the data behind it.
