What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?
There are a couple of experiences that stand out, but one from college really sticks with me. It came from a talent manager at a major talent agency.
This was a guy who regularly interacted with AAA celebrities and dealt with big-name people. He told us something in class that has always stayed with me: when talking with someone, even in a small group, be open and willing to give them your full attention.
Put down your phone and engage in active listening. Be empathetic and basically give that person your full attention. Doing so helps you build connections with people faster.
It shows respect for whatever problem they're discussing or the conversation topic. This is especially important now, as it's so easy to be on your phone or multitasking during meetings.
Being able to give whoever you're interacting with your full attention has proven really important and significant in quickly building valuable connections with people.
