What are your main responsibilities within your current role?
As a production manager, we're primarily responsible for the behind-the-scenes aspects, starting in the early stages of the process. We work with general managers and producers to determine the budgets for the technical side and labor.
Then, we collaborate with designers to take their concepts and figure out how to build them. This involves an engineering process and value engineering. Eventually, we award the show to various shops for lighting, scenery, and costumes.
We also oversee the actual building process, performing quality control simultaneously. We hire the crew who will eventually put the show in the building and run it, handling their contracts and pay.
We then manage overall logistics and schedule planning. This includes determining the necessary number of days for rehearsals, stage time with the director, and the number of trucks required.
We'll run the tech process, where actors, designers, and crew are all in the building. Our role is to get the production ready for opening night.
Once the show is running, we are responsible for its ongoing maintenance. This means ensuring everything functions daily, monitoring operating expenses, and making sure "the show must go on."
We handle this for Broadway shows and tours, which adds complexity in transporting the production between locations. We also work with theme park operators to implement their visions by managing the technical side.
