What do you enjoy most about being in your role?
The irony is, I used to do all this for fun as a volunteer. I'd go to community meetings to learn about my community.
For example, I was president of my rotary club. I was involved in civic volunteer work, putting on fundraisers, crab feeds, and hosting events to raise awareness for a cause.
It feels natural to me in this role because I'm doing the same thing, just from a different position. I'm bringing different resources to the community.
I guess, to summarize, it's fun to meet people. I love having good conversations and learning. This is like a mental travel, talking to a diverse group of people.
I've met many people I never would have crossed paths with otherwise. This is just how it is; you might see the same few people.
But when you get out into the community or visit a new one, having a reason to be there softens any fear or anxiety. You have a way to connect and something bigger than yourself to talk about.
That brings out the human element in a lot of people. I think it's fascinating how people go from confusion to clarity. Selfishly, I like watching that process, like watching a flower bloom.
It's selfish because I want to know how to do it for myself. How are you solving this problem? I might have that problem in the future, or I can use that information to help someone else.
So, in the process of building relationships and collaborating, it's all education.
