Entry-Level Positions For Aspiring Placer County District Representatives
Frank, a District Representative at Placer County, suggests internships as a "taste and test" to see if the field aligns with one's passions, while also highlighting behind-the-scenes roles like clerical, engineering, or systems jobs, and emphasizing that having interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills will "get you in the door," but passion and aligned principles are what keep you there. Frank ultimately recommends seeing if it is a passion, and if it's something someone would still do even if they had a million dollars.

What entry-level positions in this field might an undergraduate or graduate student consider?
Internships are cyclically available, and honestly, I recommend them. They allow you to test yourself and see if you truly want to do this kind of work.
There's a difficult balance between loyalty and politics. As you advance in government, you'll need to choose sides. However, there are many behind-the-scenes roles like clerical, engineering, or systems jobs.
I manage people and can distance myself from the "dirtiness" of politics. You won't know your true passions or where you want to be until you're in these situations. Internships and entry-level jobs are good for this.
You can consider my position entry-level since I'm hired, not elected. Your interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills will get you in the door. However, passion and alignment with your life's purpose will keep you there.
Ultimately, whether your principles are challenged or supported will guide you. There are many ways to be involved: speech writing, research, interning, or volunteering for campaigns.
Volunteering offers a quick snapshot of people, issues, and rewards. If something is your passion, it doesn't feel like work. If you'd still do it for a million dollars, you're likely in the right place, doing it for the right, heartfelt reasons.
