How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
A couple of things come to mind. First and foremost, passion. This work is really challenging, especially in the education field. Grappling with all the different challenges students and staff may be facing is hard, so passion is number one.
I think that will get you through a lot of the hard days. Number two is resiliency. People who are resilient can overcome challenges and won't get defeated if something doesn't go the way they wanted. They can start again every day with a new day or a fresh start.
I would say people who really value and believe in teamwork. This is not a field where you can isolate yourself and just close your classroom door to do your own thing. Rather, the best educators are those who are willing to ask for help, learn from each other, and share ideas to strengthen teaching.
Let's see what else. The last ones I would say are people who are flexible and willing to grow. Flexibility is definitely key. There is no day that is the same when you work at a high school, as a school leader, or in the education field.
Every day is different and comes with new opportunities and new challenges. So, people who are willing to be flexible and adapt to the things that come their way. Then the last one, around growth. This field requires a willingness to grow. Things change; times change, and the needs of students are always changing.
Being willing to challenge your own perspective and viewpoints, and being open to new ideas, is what leads to really robust and successful programming at schools.
