Video Highlights

1. Effective communication is crucial, especially in roles with many moving parts or in consulting where proactivity is key.

2. Transitioning from structured roles (e.g., Big Four accounting) to less defined environments (e.g., startups) requires adapting communication styles and becoming more proactive.

3. Over-communication helps ensure everyone understands project needs and expectations, leading to success in consulting and other dynamic environments.

What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

One lesson I would have to go back to is communication. I know we say it a lot, but when I worked at a startup, I learned that you really have to over-communicate to understand what you need to deliver. This is true in any role, in any industry.

Moving from roles that were more laid out for me, like my previous work in auditing or in accounting and finance, was a big change. In those positions, it was very clear-cut what I had to do each day, and I didn't really have to ask anyone.

Then, when I went to a startup, which was more chaotic with a lot of moving parts, I had to step up and be more communicative and proactive. This was a great learning lesson that set me up for success in consulting.

In consulting, you also can't be reactive. You really have to be proactive and understand exactly what is going on and what the client needs from you. That was one of the biggest lessons I learned.
