People who typically thrive, I think, share a willingness to learn. This is a skill that you have to pick up, and it may not be ingrained in everyone.
I also think the ability to ask questions is important. Everyone can ask questions, but it's about asking a question that meets expectations without being too far ahead. There's a balance there that isn't always taught.
These are characteristics that people can develop. You don't necessarily need to know them all when you enter the industry, but you will eventually gain them if you're truly willing. I believe these are major characteristics.
