How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
That's a good question. I think being flexible is a really good way of looking at tech. I work in tech, even though I'm specifically in venture. People move from different companies to gain footing and access, and many are recruited elsewhere because of their experience level.
Being able to be flexible and work with different teams is a big plus. If you're going to work in the tech industry, you'll probably have a few jobs. I've had five jobs.
I know people who have worked at one company for a long time, like my best friend who has worked at Intel since high school. While those are different roles within the same company, having the ability to adapt to change and figure out what makes a company work is a big plus in tech.
You can stay with a company for a long time, and it's not inherently good or bad. However, I do think it's helpful to be constantly challenged or to find autonomy by working with different companies. I've worked with people who are quite strong and have molded themselves based on the companies they've worked in, and they tend to be influential because of that.
So, long story short, if you're flexible, easily molded, and can fit into different types of teams, you'll do very well in the tech environment.
