Entry-Level Positions For Aspiring Venture Capital Analysts

Entry-level positions at Deep Tech Venture Companies, according to a Talent Principal, often involve "due diligence or analyst positions," such as market research and company deep dives, supporting the venture team. These roles, along with finance-related work supporting portfolio companies and internal operations, primarily attract business and finance undergraduates, as highlighted by the example of a Stanford business student intern.

What entry-level positions are there in this field that an undergraduate college student might consider?

We actually have one intern, John. He was here last year and he's here this year. I love John; he's so nice. He is a business student.

He's across the street at Stanford, where my office is, so he can just walk over. That's one thing. He's kind of local. If you can find someone local too, who can be available, that's great.

I know that's hard, but I think if you can be available as an intern or entry-level, you'll go a lot farther. The roles we hire for internships are a lot of due diligence or analyst positions.

Essentially, they do market mapping. So, "Hey, give us a snapshot of what the semiconductor space is doing this month." Then they do some analytics and present some information. Or, "Hey, there's this company; do a deep dive on them. Who are their investors?" Stuff like that.

They essentially do that research for our venture team. We're generally hiring entry-level people for that. Also, a big part of venture is FP&A and finance-related work.

I'm an operator, meaning I work and help with the operations of the firm. A lot of our operators are in the finance field, so they help with the finances of giving money to our portfolio companies, finances internally for Playground, and finances of moving money around.

So, when you get money from partners, or a company is going through an M&A or something, they kind of move funds around to know where it's all being balanced. That's another space that venture tends to hire various levels in.

In conclusion, venture folks or investor-related folks are business and finance folks.
