Biggest Challenges Faced by a Talent Principal at Deep Tech Venture Company

Erica's biggest challenge as a Talent Principal in the venture capital industry is navigating its "nepo baby coded" culture, feeling like an outsider due to a background differing from the traditional path. This contrasts with prior experiences, and Erica actively confronts outdated practices and promotes inclusive language, describing it as "challenging, but...not afraid of being like, 'Hey, we don't say those things, so, and here's why.'"

What is your biggest challenge in your current role?

Venture is a really interesting industry. It's very "nepo baby coded," if you will. I don't come from that environment.

I have worked in startups, so I do have connections out there. However, it's not from your schooling or an MBA program, which is not necessarily where I've come from. I've found that I sometimes feel like an outsider, which I have to sort of reel in. I believe everyone can belong.

I would say I've only felt this way in this industry. I have never felt this way elsewhere. Venture is also sort of old-school, male-related banking.

The way things work now and how they worked 10 years ago are very different. The thought process has changed, for example, with pronouns. That's very common for me, it's how I grew up working. It's funny that in this upper echelon, that's very weird for some people.

I find that cultural change challenging, but I'm also not afraid to say, "Hey, we don't say those things, and here's why." So, that's where I currently find a challenge. I don't necessarily think that's the same in every company, but that's my challenge right now.
