What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

There are a few different buckets of work that I do. First and foremost, it's teaching classes. I teach a few different classes in both our doctoral and master's programs. The program itself is distance education or hybrid.

Most of it is distance, and then we do have some in-person time periodically throughout the semester. This includes designing courses, recording lectures, and making sure students have all the resources. I also meet with students, facilitate discussions on discussion boards, and grade assignments, basically fulfilling the professor role.

Then I also do advising. This is academic advising as well as research advising. Academic advising involves helping students through their time in our program, which could be helping them choose classes or working with them if they're struggling.

Research advising is more for the doctoral students who have to do a doctoral project. They have committee members who review their research and give them the stamp of approval that they have met the requirements of the doc project. I do that type of advising as well.

Then there's some departmental work where I sit on some committees. The committee that I chair is departmental research, helping students and faculty increase their capacity for doing research. There's also administrative work related to curriculum design, program development, and program improvement, which is more faculty-to-faculty work. I also sit on admissions interviews and review applications for admissions into the program.
