What skills are most important for a job like yours?
The most important skill that encompasses essentially all other skills is classroom management. It does not matter if you are an expert with many PhDs and have memorized the dictionary front and back.
It does not matter if you cannot ensure your classroom has a positive learning environment. This means you have to be able to have students engaged in your lesson. They're not just on their phones or talking to their peers.
You have to ensure they are not distracting each other and that they are taking responsibility for their learning. You have to make sure they are paying attention to all the wisdom coming out of your mouth.
Classroom management is a major skill. Another major skill that ties into classroom management is kindness and being genuine, because students are very smart. They can tell if you care about them, and once they feel that, they want to do that for you.
So, I think the skills are classroom management, connection, and kindness altogether, and you'll be great. Then you can learn all there is about science or whatever content area you teach. But those are the key things you need.
