David, what skills are most important for a job like yours?

I'd say thick skin and a level head. Sales in general is very up and down. There are times when it's great and everything's humming, and there are times when it's just rough.

You have to be able to weather and learn from the rough times, the same way that you can celebrate the happy ones. There are, in many companies, departments that act as your counterweight.

You need to be able to work well with them and not lose your cool. I'd say those are probably the most important things. I'd also say just general curiosity.

Sales is probably the best way to learn any industry, no matter what you get into. You're forced to speak the language, talk to people, understand their problems, and try to be solution-oriented and add value.

If you don't have the curiosity and the mindset to do that, it's probably just not the right role for you. And that's okay, but I think that's what helps and makes people successful.
