Favorite Parts Of Working In Education As An Associate Professor
David, an Associate Professor of Communication Studies, enjoys the "autonomy" in academia, specifically the freedom to teach with independence and creativity within certain guidelines. This allows for innovation in the classroom, a stark contrast to past roles where one felt constantly under a "micro microscope."

What do you enjoy most about being in your industry?
One of the really enjoyable things is autonomy. Autonomy is the freedom to teach the way I want, not that you go crazy on ideas, but you know, I have certain guidelines that I need to follow. What's nice is I have a lot of independence in my job, and I don't have somebody looking over my shoulder all the time.
I do have a dean that I report to and a department chair, don't get me wrong. They will follow up with me, and I am evaluated on a regular basis. But I have a lot of freedom and independence, and I really enjoy that in my career.
In the past, I've been in jobs where you have a manager that's always on your case, watching you, like you're under a microscope all the time. It's not that way where I'm at right now, and I really love that. It allows me to be creative and share some ideas, bringing that into the classroom as well.
