What have you learned about this role that you wish someone would have told you before you entered the industry?

That's a good question. I was always someone in college who felt I didn't want a relationship because I wanted to work in sports. I wanted to get as far as I possibly could.

I didn't know if that meant moving to different states or whatever that entailed, but I prioritized flexibility at all costs. I did that at the sacrifice of relationships and some friendships. Working around the clock is one thing, but it's not the most important thing. Finding balance is super important.

Four or five years into my time with the Diamondbacks, I started feeling lonely and regretful about the mindset I had in college and my early years with the team. I had almost fully sacrificed personal happiness for how hard I worked. There's always a balance that can be met.

If you're not taking care of yourself, and I don't just mean eating well and exercising, but if you're not focusing on your personal relationships and what makes you happy, it will impact your presence at work and how hard you're able to work. I came to that realization about four or five years into the Diamondbacks. It was really tough for a while.

It wasn't ultimately why I left the Diamondbacks, but when I came to the PPL, I met my girlfriend about a year in. I've never been happier, and I've also never been able to work harder than I do right now. I think it's because I feel really secure on that side of my life.

My advice would be to have aspirations and work really hard, but don't do it to the detriment of your personal relationships and what makes you happy, because they feed each other. If you can get the personal side in order and feel good about it, it will make you more confident, more present, and ultimately a better coworker.
