What skills are most important for a job like yours?
That's a good question. I think about it a lot because when I got here at the PLL, I was the eighth employee. The other seven had all come from Ivy Leagues, like Princeton or Dartmouth, and I went to the University of Arizona.
I think the way I was able to carve out a niche, and I say this a bit tongue-in-cheek, is that you just really need to be a hard worker and consistent. The way we look for people to join our staff is that those are qualities we can teach you the role for, for the most part.
When you're here, what's really great about the PLL, and not a knock to the Diamondbacks because they were great, is that with the Diamondbacks, you are really siloed in ticket sales, and that was my role. You learn it and become an expert, but you don't get to learn about other departments.
Here, it's so collaborative because we need to be nimble. You end up learning so much about operations, sponsorship, production, content, and all those different elements. So when you get here, we feel really secure in the fact that we can teach you the role.
It's the intangibles that you need to have in order to be successful in a startup, in a fast-moving organization like this. That really comes down to how hard you work, if you are reliable and consistent, and what your energy level is.
Are you a positive person? Can you really work through tough times but maintain that level of positivity? Those are the types of things that are really hard to find in people, but when you do, it's a shining light. Those are the people that you really want to go long on.
As you get older and more experienced and into more elevated roles, there are certainly more specific things that you need to be better at, like building strategy, managing a budget, building pricing models, financial models, and compensation plans. But in order to get here, work ethic, consistency, and positivity are the things that continue to ring true.
Where I see the most successful people, they just inhabit those traits inherently.
