What a Partner at Advue Consulting Wishes They Knew Before Consulting

Daniel, a Partner at Advue Consulting, wishes someone had told him that "mostly everything" needed to succeed in the industry is readily available online for free or inexpensively, citing examples like IBM's data science program being replicated on Coursera and financial modeling courses costing a mere "hundred bucks." This highlights the accessibility of crucial skills development outside of traditional corporate training programs.

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone would have told you before you entered the industry?

I think what I wish I'd known earlier is that most of what I want to know is available online, either for free or for a very low price.

For example, at IBM, if you join and want to become a data scientist, they have a program that takes three to four months to complete. This program will give you the skillset to be competent enough to join a project.

All of this is available on Coursera right now for free. There was another time I needed to do some financial modeling. I had done some in college and at KPMG, but I hadn't done it in a while.

There was a guy selling a course who used to work at Goldman Sachs for about a hundred dollars. My point is that if you feel you're lacking some skills, you can almost always find those skills, either for free or at a relatively low price online. This can at least put you on the path to feeling more confident in what you need to know.
