What skills are most important for your job?
I'd say there are probably two key skills for being a small business owner: patience and persistence. It takes a while to secure a gig, and you might think you have something locked down, but it takes longer than you expect to come to fruition. Learning to be more patient has definitely been something I've been trying to focus on and hone over the years.
Persistence is also crucial. You definitely have to stay consistent and persistent in the types of clients you want to achieve and what you want to do. I'm always posting on social media to stay top of mind. If somebody wants a workshop or coaching, it might not be the right time.
But maybe in six months, maybe in a year, they might have that need. So how do I make sure they know that Dana is still here, ready to engage when they have the appetite and the ability to do it?
Organization and multitasking are also vital. There are so many things one has to do, a myriad of clients in different phases of development. That includes starting a relationship, closing out an engagement, billing and invoicing, insurance, scheduling, relationship building, and networking. You name it.
The ability to wear many hats is critical. And so, I'd say that, plus the organization component, how do you stay on top of it all and not let things fall through the cracks? Because again, I can do really well for my business, but if I have one bad experience, that could spread like wildfire. So, I'd say for me, that is another key skill: organization and just really staying on track because it's vital.
