What are your main responsibilities within your current role?
My current role's title is Construction Project Manager. Helix is an environmental planning company with several distinct groups.
We have a planning group that handles environmental documents like CEQA, NEPA, EIR, and CQA processes. There are also regulatory teams who manage permits with various agencies.
Our company includes landscape architecture and cultural resource teams, which focus on archeology. We also have a biology team with field biologists.
My specific role is within the construction group, which implements all habitat restoration projects. My job is to manage these habitat restoration projects from start to finish.
This involves managing field crews who handle tasks like planting, seeding, and irrigation installation. We also perform minor earthwork, grading for wetlands and vernal pool habitats, and stream channels.
The crews also create habitat features and conduct significant brush management. This includes tree trimming, removal, mowing, and herbicide treatment for invasive species.
A key part of my role is business development, especially since our company is growing. I attend networking events and connect with private developers and home builders, as there's a lot of development in California.
We also work on public projects with cities, counties, agencies, and districts like irrigation and park districts. For these public jobs, there's a competitive bidding process.
This involves identifying new opportunities, attending pre-bid meetings, and acquiring projects. It also includes connecting with clients, developing cost estimates, and writing proposals that detail the scope of work.
Implementing the actual work is a major component, which means managing schedules for multiple crews working on various projects simultaneously. The work varies depending on the season.
I manage the crews, ensuring they have the necessary supplies for each project. We also schedule work in advance and plan for staffing needs, projecting how many crews are required for the upcoming year.
This requires simultaneously managing current projects while planning for the future to ensure success. It involves securing supplies, ordering plants and other materials, and arranging for equipment.
Site visits are also part of my responsibilities, where I check on the crews while they're working. Finally, I oversee the project close-out process.
The main goals are to successfully manage projects from start to finish, coordinate effectively with clients, and ensure their satisfaction with the completed work.
