What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

The responsibilities of an executive assistant generally include typical tasks like managing emails and scheduling. However, for those in cross-functional roles, like myself at Boost VC, the duties can be broader.

Boost VC is a small, but mighty team of nine, so it operates with a startup mentality where everyone pitches in. Some executive assistants also take on office manager duties, such as ordering lunch, managing office inventory, and ensuring supplies are stocked. I, for example, set up the coffee station each morning for the team and get my boss his food.

My main responsibility, however, is ensuring my boss performs at his peak. This can involve anything that helps him achieve that. Unlike someone with a strict employee mindset focused on a daily task list, my job experience has taught me to prioritize what makes my boss successful and energized that day.

If a task like signing documents through DocuSign isn't the most critical item, we address it later. The focus is on what will make him successful in the immediate moment, requiring my attention to help him move forward.

Currently, we're ramping up for our founder summits, which we host twice a year. These week-long events bring in founders we've invested in for a set program. We invite speakers and host events to foster networking. Ensuring these summits run smoothly is a significant responsibility.

This can also include hands-on event support or even something as seemingly simple as servicing my boss's Tesla while he's out of town. While not all executive assistants perform personal tasks, I find enjoyment in these varied duties.

Some in this profession can develop a sense of superiority, believing they are above running errands. I, however, enjoy them, whether it's picking up cupcakes for a child's birthday or getting one for myself. It's about finding enjoyment in the smaller tasks.

To be fair, many executive assistant responsibilities can appear mundane from an outsider's perspective. Scheduling a call or sending an email might not be inherently exciting. However, my role is to ensure my boss is at his best, and by extension, the team is also performing well.

I approach my job holistically, taking on any responsibilities within my capabilities. I don't handle specialized tasks like cryptocurrency or tax filings, leaving those to our controller, Derek. However, anything else I can do, I will.
