Could you walk me through your career path, starting with your experiences in college? Please include any internships or jobs you had before your current role.
My career path started as a transfer student. I began at Foothill Community College in the Bay Area and then transferred to UCLA. During my time in college, I actually changed my major three times.
Initially, I was a theater major. Then I pursued architecture, and finally, before transferring, I decided on English. My original goal was to become an English teacher, which I did.
After graduating from UCLA, I earned a master's in education at UC Santa Cruz. I also obtained my single subject teaching credential in English to teach high school. I taught high school English and part-time at the community college level for about seven years.
People often ask me how I transitioned from teaching to venture capital, noting the vast gap between the two fields. The truth is, I had a lot of jobs in addition to going to school. I've been employed since I was 15, starting at a frozen yogurt shop.
While in college, I worked multiple jobs, often two at a time, starting from age 18. It wasn't until recently, when I moved into venture capital, that I only had one job, which is quite amazing.
Many people inquire about my career transition. I actually worked in many related jobs that utilized the same skillsets as my current role throughout my life. What many don't realize is that the transition is less about the specific job context and more about the skills you use and the experience you gain.
For starter jobs that could lead into my career, think about roles like a receptionist or a restaurant hostess. It was experiences like those that ultimately led me to where I am now, as an executive assistant at a venture capital firm.
