What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?
One thing I did during my undergraduate career to set myself up for future success was not just joining a radio station, but creating content in general. Whether you're working in advertising, radio, television, or any aspect of the media industry, everyone should have a basic understanding of what it means to create content.
This involves planning and segmenting what your potential radio segment, podcast, blog video, or TikTok videos may look like. Creating content requires patience for the craft, as it takes a lot of hard work to plan and then edit afterwards. Ultimately, it builds a sense of security in the work you are doing.
This isn't about needing your work to be valued and appreciated by everyone else, but by you. I was very proud of the news reports I created. Even if there were some I didn't enjoy as much, I could still remain professional, get through them, and learn lessons from what went well and what didn't.
All of those were valuable experiences. With practice, you eventually learn the artistry and terminology. Establishing yourself as a young professional is a discipline crucial for succeeding in any industry, particularly in advertising, and even more so as an account manager, account executive, or account coordinator.
