What skills are most important for a job like yours?
Within private equity, there are different functions, just as there would be in any business. My job is client-facing, working with both existing and new clients. This involves shaking a lot of hands, meeting many people, and attending events oriented towards investors.
These events can range from obvious ones like conventions or conferences to more informal gatherings. This week, for example, I'm hosting an event where I've invited people to hang out informally. While we might discuss business a little, the primary goal is to get to know people I already have a relationship with.
It's about deepening those relationships and understanding their investment needs. Therefore, building new relationships and cultivating existing ones is key, requiring a willingness to be social.
You also need some level of analytical understanding, as we are in finance and work as investors. I have a background in analytics from a prior career, which is helpful for understanding how deals are structured and how returns are achieved. This analytical background is an important aspect of working in my industry.
