What skills are most important for a job like yours?

What has proven to be the most important over my entire career involves really just listening and understanding what others' goals and objectives are. This applies whether it's in the deal-making process, where you might be working with a lawyer representing a client. Instead of just going back and forth about the specifics of the deal, it's important to dig in and try to understand what their client wants and needs.

Or it could be on the corporate side, working across multiple divisions of a company. The goal is to get to the root of what is driving particular groups to make certain decisions. Then, try to find common ground and get creative. This is true whether it's in deal-making or coming up with a strategy within a corporate environment.

More recently, the most important skill is understanding how data drives business. This has really become apparent in the last 10 years, particularly in the entertainment industry. Working at Netflix, there was this perception that data drove every single decision.

However, what's important to understand about data is how it can guide decisions, but also its limitations. Then, make your decisions based on knowledge of both the positives and negatives of what the data is telling you.
