College Experiences That Helped A Philanthropy Officer At UNICEF USA Succeed

Bridget's undergraduate experience, while in geology, didn't directly translate to their current role as a Philanthropy Officer at UNICEF USA; instead, the most important factor was "listening to what you are interested in and care about". Following this guiding principle, and not being afraid to change course when necessary, allowed Bridget to find fulfilling roles and ultimately land their "dream role".

What did you do in undergrad to set you up for success in your career?

That is an excellent question. Undergrad is an exciting time to explore a lot of things. I was a geology major, but I am not a geologist anymore.

It's hard for me to say that I studied x, y, z in college and it led me here. I think really listening to what you are interested in and care about is one of the most important things you can do.

I think trying to force yourself into something that's not a right fit means you'll be unhappy in the end. It's also okay if you find yourself unhappy; you can quit and find something that does make you happy.

I will say I always listened to what I was interested in and what has made me happy along the way, and I haven't been afraid to let that guide me. I've done a lot of things and I can fully say that I enjoyed each of them.

It has gotten me to a point today where I followed that happiness and I'm in my dream role. I felt that way about geology when I was majoring in it in undergrad. That was the right fit at the right time. So, listen to what is a right fit for you.
