What did you do in college to set you up for success in your career?

While I was taking my college courses, I knew I wanted to walk away after graduation with a genuine understanding of what I learned in my courses and projects. So I took my time doing my homework and studying. I really focused on school and wanted a genuine understanding of the topics.

I didn't want to take a test on Wednesday afternoon, cram everything, memorize it, and then forget about it afterwards. I thoroughly took my time to actually understand the topics and the lessons being taught.

Now, to this day, several years later, I can think back onto something I did in class. Maybe it was a case study, a project, a presentation, a topic I learned about, or some financial formula. I remember it not because I memorized it, but because I have an understanding of it, which helps me recall it.

Taking that extra time has really proved to be valuable because I can be a go-to person in my company when it comes to solving issues, especially finance-related or modeling-related things. Taking that extra time to genuinely understand what I was learning really set me up for success.
