How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
People who typically thrive in tech are go-getters who are eager to learn and build new relationships. I would really add an extra emphasis on relationship building.
It's important to be likable by your peers. To do that, you need to show compassion for others and take a genuine interest in their success.
One thing I've learned that has stayed with me is that it's most important to build connections at your level in your career. Your peers are the ones who will grow with you through the years and will be the future executives.
A lot of people get hung up when they think about networking and say, "Oh, I have to network with a lot of different executives." But I've found it really valuable to grow close with your peers.
Understand what people want to do with their careers. See how they want to be successful and try to figure out how you can work together to achieve mutual success.
