What skills are most important for a job like yours?

The main thing you learn is Civil 3D. It's Autodesk's CAD program, and it's what we use daily. Once you become efficient with it, it makes your life so much easier because the program is very strong, and there's always so much to learn.

I still learn a lot in it every day. I work closely with a colleague who is a CAD master, and he teaches me everything. There's also WaterCAD or StormCAD.

We use those to analyze our storm sewer and water networks. This ensures the water pressure is adequate for your home, so you don't have issues like taking a shower with low pressure. For storm sewers, we want to make sure we aren't flooding anyone's homes. These are probably the big three programs I use.

But for personal skills, I think communication is paramount. I'd tell anyone to just communicate. Be open and honest with your clients and colleagues. It truly makes your life much easier.
