How would you describe people who typically thrive in this industry?
People who typically thrive in this industry have a couple of things they do right. The first is partnering or working with groups, other consultants, or speakers to leverage a referral network.
Building a strong network takes a long time, especially when people are paying you for your expertise. It's helpful to partner with others who are more established in a certain industry or niche.
You can't do it alone. The hardest part about building a network and gaining clients is feeling like you are alone, like a solopreneur. The sooner you can group up with others or build an association, the better. This works for business consulting, public speaking, and online courses. Leaning on others and working with extended networks is best.
The second thing is leveraging technology as much as possible. I'm a Google power user, using Google Workspace, Spreadsheets, Docs, Drive, and Tasks to stay organized. This keeps my work accessible on my phone or laptop, making it truly virtual and remote. You need to get organized digitally to accomplish your goals.
Another part of using technology is building an automated sales funnel. As a business consultant, you need to leverage your time speaking to and working with clients. This means you can't spend too much time talking to leads or answering emails. You are the marketer and salesperson for your business and need to dedicate time to it.
The more automation you can implement, and the stronger your website and digital presence, the better you can attract good clients. This allows you to spend your time talking to truly valuable leads. It's always a work in progress, but having the savviness to build and maintain these systems is a powerful skill.
