What is one lesson that you have learned that has proven significant in your career?

The biggest lesson I've learned is to never apply for a job without a referral. This is important to me because I experienced a layoff in the tech industry and was switching careers.

I spent quite a bit on unemployment, trying to find a new job in a difficult market. The job search can be very hard and disheartening.

I quickly learned I wouldn't waste my energy applying for jobs without a referral. It meant potential disappointment and a lot of work on things I wasn't sure about. It pushed me to network.

I now have many connections in this industry because I would host five to ten informational calls a week. I learned about the industry, companies, and different roles. My network grew tenfold within the months I was looking.

Meeting people and getting referrals gives you more confidence in your fit with the company and what they offer. You also have confidence that people will be excited about you joining because someone has spoken on your behalf. I believe this creates a recipe for success.
