What a Communications Strategist at a University Health Nonprofit Wishes They Had Known Before Entering the Communications Industry

Apoorvaa, a communications strategist transitioning from journalism, wishes someone had emphasized the many transferable skills applicable to communications strategy, stating, "there are so many transferable skills that you can bring from any background into communications." This realization highlights the value of diverse backgrounds and encourages those with relevant skills, such as strong writing or public speaking abilities, to not underestimate their potential in the field.

Transcript

What have you learned about this role that you wish someone would have told you before you entered the industry?

I think, and I'm speaking from my experience, I was a journalist before and always scared to venture into communication strategy. I had learned a little bit about it from my degrees previously.

I wish people had told me there are so many transferable skills from any background into communications. You don't necessarily have to be super trained in it or have a great big degree in communications.

For example, if you're in journalism and are a good writer or public speaker, you can bring those skills, and it would really add value. I would have perhaps not underestimated my own abilities when coming into communications.
