Transcript

What are your main responsibilities within your current role?

I currently work as a consultant, providing services to school districts across California related to their special education programs. I have 25 years of experience in public service, beginning as a school psychologist.

I then became a special education director, and later a regional director of special education in California. We call these SELPAs, which stands for Special Education Local Plan Areas. In this role, I supported special education services in an entire county.

Because of that experience and knowledge base, I now work with school districts' special education, business, and HR departments. I help them analyze their services, personnel, and finances. My goal is to ensure they are serving students with disabilities at the appropriate level.

I also help them ensure their staff have the necessary skills, materials, and strategies to do their jobs well. I assist them in identifying the business components needed for their programs. This includes budget, personnel, and program planning.

Special education is highly specialized but cannot operate in isolation. We must gather information and collaborate with the entire educational community. We are all focused on student outcomes and inclusive opportunities.

Special education cannot achieve this alone. I spend a lot of time working with leadership to help them develop and run effective, efficient, and fiscally responsible special education programs.
