What does a day in the life of a functional owner look like?
Lots of meetings and drafting communications, more than anything else. Each project is a little bit different, quite a bit different, in what we are improving. However, the tasks I need to get us there are pretty much the same.
This involves coordinating meetings with all the impacted stakeholders. The goal is to ensure all necessary background information is gathered and that we have the appropriate people in the conversation.
Once we get through that initial gathering stage, we move on to get alignment between all stakeholders involved in the change. This ensures everyone is on the same page about what we are changing and why we are implementing it.
Then, I ensure all stakeholders complete their deliverables. A big part of my role is chasing other people down. I rely heavily on individuals lent to me from different teams who have their own regular day jobs.
I need to be mindful of this fact and set timelines that allow them to continue their day jobs and meet their deliverables, while also meeting the project's demands. The biggest thing is really just communicating to all impacted parties throughout the project.
This ensures they know what's coming, when changes are happening, and if they need to be involved in any sign-offs before anything goes live. So, it's a lot of meetings and a lot of drafting communications, more than anything else.
